By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• An Update of Pain Management Drugs for Prescribers - 2 hours

  • Explain the current approach to the management of patients with pain.

  • Discuss the nonopioid and opioid pharmacologic options available for treatment of pain and for acute and preventive treatment of migraine and compare them based on their efficacy, dosage and administration, potential adverse effects, drug interactions, and cost.

  • Review the efficacy and safety of the fixed-dose combination of tramadol and celecoxib (Seglentis) for treatment of acute pain and intraoperative administration of the fixed-dose combination of bupivacaine and meloxicam (Zynrelef) for treatment of postsurgical pain.

  • Discuss the efficacy and safety of IV meloxicam (Anjeso) for treatment of moderate to severe pain.

  • Determine the most appropriate therapy given the clinical presentation of an individual patient with pain.

• Update to Medications Used to Treat Substance Abuse Disorders - 3 hours

  • Explain the approach to the management of a patient with alcohol use disorder.

  • Discuss the pharmacologic options available for treatment of alcohol use disorder and compare them based on their efficacy, dosage and administration, and potential adverse effects.

  • Discuss the use of Zimhi, a higher-dose injectable formulation of naloxone, for reversal of opioid overdose.

  • Compare the pharmacokinetic properties of the new 8-mg intranasal formulation of naloxone (Kloxxado) to other available formulations of the drug.

  • Determine the most appropriate therapy given the clinical presentation of an individual patient with substance abuse disorder.

  • Review the efficacy and safety of drugs used for opioid use disorder.

• Controlled Substances and Substance Abuse: Best Practices for the Healthcare Professional - 2 hours

  • Define drug misuse, drug abuse, addiction, and the scope of the drug abuse epidemic in the United States.

  • Identify how controlled substances are classified according to schedules and provide examples of drugs on each schedule.

  • Name commonly misused and diverted drugs as well as sources for diversion.

  • Identify behaviors that could indicate drug misuse or diversion on the part of a patient or healthcare professional.

  • List risk factors for drug misuse or diversion.

  • Identify best practices for prescribers and nurses to prevent drug misuse or diversion.

This 8-hour course consolidates four modules for physicians, nurses, and dentists. Content covers current pain medicines and adjuvants, evidence-based medications for substance use disorders, 2023 to 2024 updates in OUD pharmacotherapy, and practical best practices for prescribing and monitoring controlled substances. Learners translate guideline-aligned recommendations into daily decisions for screening, initiation, titration, follow-up, risk mitigation, documentation, and referral, thereby improving outcomes and compliance.
