How many CE hours do Hawaii physicians need?
Hawaii physicians need 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years, earned as either 40 Category 1 hours plus 60 Category 2 hours, or 100 Category 1 hours alone ( Haw. Code R. § 16-85-33 ). You may complete all hours online with an on-demand Georgia CME Physician Package
Category 1 credit comes from ACCME-accredited activities, residency training, or advanced degree programs, while Category 2 covers other CME lectures and seminars, teaching, publications, and self-instruction ( Haw. Code R. § 16-85-34 ).
Every standard physician license renews on the same date: not later than January 31 of each even-numbered year, regardless of when the license was first issued ( Haw. Code R. § 16-85-33 ). Physicians licensed under Hawaii's separate government-physician category renew annually instead, under their own requirement.
Which CE topics are required for Hawaii physicians?
Hawaii sets no state-mandated CME topics for physicians — all 100 hours may be earned on any subject relevant to practice.
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder , per the federal MATE Act — a federal registration requirement, not a Hawaii Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Do newly licensed Hawaii physicians need CE for their first renewal?
Not the full amount. A physician initially licensed in the first year of the biennium completes a reduced 50 hours (20 Category 1 plus 30 Category 2, or 50 Category 1 alone) for that first renewal. A physician initially licensed in the second year of the biennium owes no CME hours at all for that first renewal ( Haw. Code R. § 16-85-33 ).
Does the Hawaii Medical Board audit CE records?
Yes. The Board conducts random audits and may require any licensee to submit evidence beyond their renewal certification to demonstrate compliance ( Haw. Code R. § 16-85-37 ).
