Iowa Dentist Standard Renewal Requirements: Iowa dentists must complete 30 CE hours every two years within the Sept 1–Aug 31 cycle, including 1 hour each in infection control and Iowa jurisprudence, plus targeted hours if you prescribe opioids (1 hour) or hold a sedation permit (6 hours). • Live / "In-Person" Hour Minimum: Iowa caps self-study at 12 hours per renewal period; the remainder (up to 18 hours) must be non-self-study (e.g., live/interactive or other approved activities; real-time webinars are not counted as self-study). DIAL

• Dispensing: Dentists who procure, stock, prescribe, administer, or dispense controlled substances in Iowa must hold an Iowa Controlled Substances Act (CSA) registration and (when applicable) register with the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) as part of the CSA process. • Other CE Options: You may carry over up to 15 hours from the previous period (starting with 2025; carryover excludes CPR, Infection Control, Jurisprudence, Radiography, Opioids); convention-type meetings credit = 1.5 hours/day, max 6 per biennium; volunteer dentistry at free clinics = up to 6 hours; teaching related to academic duties = max 6; publishing scientific articles = up to 20 (max 5 per article); keep CE proof 4 years.
