  • Vermont Physician Assistant Standard Renewal Requirements: Physician Assistants in Vermont renew their licenses every two years by January 31 of even-numbered years and must complete 100 hours of CME every 2 years, including at least 50 hours Category 1 AMA PRA credits or equivalent. PAs with DEA registration are required to complete 2 hours of

    CME every renewal cycle and a one-time 8-hour opioid/substance use disorder CME starting from June 27, 2023. Maintenance of NCCPA certification satisfies CME requirements except for the mandatory controlled substances education. These regulations are established and enforced by the Vermont Board of Medical Practice

  • Certification alternative (ABMS/AOA or NCCPA): NCCPA certification or recertification completed during the two-year licensure period may be accepted in lieu of the 100 CME hours.

  • Controlled substance / Opioid prescribing: PAs who prescribe controlled substances (DEA registrants or applicants) must complete at least 2 hours of CME on controlled-substances prescribing covering required topics; activities must be AMA PRA Cat 1, AAPA Cat 1, or Board-designated.

  • DEA or PMP enrollment: VPMS (Vermont Prescription Monitoring System) registration is required for all Vermont-licensed prescribers of controlled substances, and prescribers must query VPMS in specified situations before prescribing.
