I am always interested in continuing education in the areas of health, wellness, nutrition and mental health. Your course was well written, well organized and helpful in meeting state licensure requirements.
Very well written, easy to digest, time efficient, and straight to the point. Thank you!
I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
I am always looking for concise ,thorough, and up to date continuing education, and this course provided exactly what I was looking for. Thank you
Enjoyed this course! It squarely met my license renewal requirement as a physician. It was well-written, and an altogether enjoyable read.
State requirements for Ohio Medical Doctors
All Ohio Physicians Need:
- 1 Hour Duty to Report Misconduct Training
Some Ohio Physicians Also Need:
- 20 Hours Pain Medicine CME — If Practicing at a Pain Management Clinic
- 8 Hours DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)
How many CE hours do Ohio physicians need?
Ohio physicians need 50 hours of CME every two years, from AMA Category 1 or AOA Category 1 sources — Category 2 credit is not accepted ( OAC 4731-10-02 ).
Renewal falls every two years, on the physician's license expiration date ( ORC 4731.281 ). A CME-hour waiver (not a renewal exemption) is available for a physician disabled by illness or accident for 6 or more consecutive months, or absent from the U.S. for 6 or more months ( OAC 4731-10-03 ). A pending rule would rescind and replace OAC 4731-10-03 with a clearer waiver-request process and two new restrictions — the Board could not waive the full CME requirement for any period, or grant a waiver for consecutive periods — these are proposed changes. Confirm their effective date with the Board before applying them to a renewal.
Which CE topics are required for Ohio physicians?
Every physician must complete 1 hour of CME on the duty to report misconduct, using the Board's free video course, effective for renewals filed on or after July 1, 2021 ( OAC 4731-10-02 ; State Medical Board of Ohio — Duty to Report ).
A physician who owns or provides care at a pain management clinic must also complete 20 hours of Category I pain medicine CME, including at least one course addressing the potential for addiction, each two-year cycle — these hours are accepted toward the general 50-hour requirement rather than owed in addition to it ( OAC 4731-29-01 ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — not an Ohio Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Do newly licensed Ohio physicians need CE for their first renewal?
Yes. Because each physician's two-year cycle is individually anchored to their own license-issuance date, every registration period — including the first — runs a full 24 months, and the standard 50-hour requirement applies ( OAC 4731-10-01, -10-02 ).
Does the State Medical Board of Ohio audit CE records?
Yes. Physicians self-certify compliance at renewal, and the Board audits by selecting applications for verification; documentation must be retained for 2 years after the CME period ends ( OAC 4731-10-08 ). A pending rule (new OAC 4731-10-07, filed with JCARR for an August 19, 2026 hearing; adoption status unconfirmed) would formalize this process with specific timelines: an emailed audit notice, 14 days for the physician to acknowledge it, and 30 days to submit evidence of completed CME, with a failure to respond referred for investigation. A related pending change to OAC 4731-10-08 would also tighten what counts as acceptable evidence, from a general activity description to specifically requiring certificates of completion or institutional transcripts.
