State requirements for Montana Medical Doctors
All Montana Physicians Need:
- No Montana-mandated topics — Montana does not require continuing medical education for physician license renewal.
Some Montana Physicians Also Need:
- 8 Hours DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)
How many CE hours do Montana physicians need?
Montana does not require continuing medical education for physician license renewal. The Board's renewal requirements address fees and renewal timing ( Montana Board of Medical Examiners — FAQ ; Mont. Code Ann. § 37-1-306 ).
Physician licenses renew every two years by March 31. Physicians with odd-numbered licenses renew in odd-numbered years; those with even-numbered licenses renew in even-numbered years ( Montana Board of Medical Examiners — Renewal Process ).
Which CE topics are required for Montana physicians?
Montana has no mandatory CE topic for physician licensure or renewal.
Physicians holding a DEA registration must still complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — a federal requirement tied to the DEA registration itself, not a Montana Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
Montana physicians who prescribe controlled substances register with the Montana Prescription Drug Registry (MPDR), a prescription-monitoring database rather than a separate state controlled-substance license; it carries no CE requirement of its own for physicians ( Montana Board of Medical Examiners — Prescription Drug Registry ).
Do newly licensed Montana physicians need CE for their first renewal?
No. Montana does not require CE at any renewal, including the first, since it has no continuing medical education requirement for physician licensure.
Does the Montana Board of Medical Examiners audit CE records?
No. Because Montana does not require CE for physician license renewal, the Board has no CE records to audit.

I am always interested in continuing education in the areas of health, wellness, nutrition and mental health. Your course was well written, well organized and helpful in meeting state licensure requirements.
Very well written, easy to digest, time efficient, and straight to the point. Thank you!
I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
I am always looking for concise ,thorough, and up to date continuing education, and this course provided exactly what I was looking for. Thank you
Enjoyed this course! It squarely met my license renewal requirement as a physician. It was well-written, and an altogether enjoyable read.
