How many CE hours do Mississippi physicians need?

Mississippi physicians need 40 hours of Category 1 CME every two years, with no carryover of excess hours into the next cycle ( MSBML — CME Requirements ; MSBML Administrative Code, Title 30, Part 2610, Ch. 2, Rule 2.1 ). Accepted sponsors include the AMA, ACCME, and other ABMS- or AOA-recognized accrediting bodies.

The physician license itself is renewed annually through MELS, but CE compliance is certified on a two-year cycle — the current cycle runs July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2028 ( MSBML — Renewals ; MSBML — MD/DO Permanent Renewal ). Since February 27, 2026, physicians no longer submit CME documentation directly to the Board; instead they attest compliance at each MELS renewal and keep records on hand in case of audit, using either a Board-recognized tracking organization (CE Broker, ACCME, ABMS, or AOA) or active board certification with ABMS or AOA ( MSBML — CME Requirements ).

Which CE topics are required for Mississippi physicians?

Mississippi's 40-hour requirement carries no mandated topic for physicians generally — all 40 hours may be earned in any Category 1 subject matter.

A physician practicing in a registered pain management practice must separately qualify through one of several board-recognized pathways (including certain ABMS/AOA board certifications, an approved residency, or 100 hours of interactive Category 1 CME in pain management), then complete 30 hours of Category 1 CME every two years on pain management, addiction, or opioid prescribing, in addition to the standard 40 hours ( MSBML — Pain Practice Registration, Rule 1.14 ).

A separate bariatric-medicine CME pathway (former Rule 1.6, "Bariatric Medicine, Medical Weight Loss, or Weight Management Practice") has been repealed. The Board's current Administrative Code lists it as "[Repealed]" with no surviving rule text, and neither the Board's licensure pages nor its CME Requirements page carry any active bariatric-medicine CME obligation ( MSBML Administrative Code, Title 30, Part 2640, Ch. 1 ).

Every physician who holds a DEA registration must complete the federal one-time, 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorders. The Board recognizes this federal training as satisfying its own controlled-substance training expectation, with no separate state-specific controlled-substance CE required ( MSBML — CME Reporting Requirements Notice ; DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).

Do newly licensed Mississippi physicians need CE for their first renewal?

No. A physician is exempt from the CME requirement for the two-year cycle in which they receive their initial Mississippi license after June 30 of an even-numbered year, are completing residency or fellowship training, or obtain first-time board certification during that cycle ( MSBML — CME Requirements ; Rule 2.3, MSBML Administrative Code, Title 30, Part 2610, Ch. 2).

Does the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure audit CE records?

Yes. The Board randomly selects licensees to verify CME compliance after they attest at renewal. Any deficiency must be corrected within six months of notification, or the license is subject to suspension ( MSBML — CME Requirements ; Rules 2.4–2.5, MSBML Administrative Code, Title 30, Part 2610, Ch. 2).
