Virginia Medical Doctor Standard Renewal Requirements: Medical Doctors in Virginia renew their licenses biennially by the last day of their birth month, completing 60 hours of CME every 2 years with at least half of those hours in Category 1 (AMA PRA Category 1) CME. Since 2024, licensees must complete 1 hour of CME every renewal on human trafficking recognition and response . Optional opioid prescribing CME requirements may apply depending on DEA registration status. Physicians may substitute CME hours with successful ABMS board certification or Maintenance of Certification (MOC), except for mandatory topic hours. These renewal standards are enforced by the Virginia Board of Medicine through its continuing education program Virginia Board of Medicine CE and AMA Ed Hub Virginia CME .
