State requirements for Louisiana Dentists
20 Live Hours
3 hours on Opioid Management - one time requirement for prescribers
Louisiana Dentist Standard Renewal Requirements: Louisiana dentists renew every two years, with licenses expiring December 31 each year of the biennium (current cycle 2025–2026; next expiration Dec 31, 2025). Dentists must complete 30 clinical CE hours each period, including 20 in-person clinical hours and 10 clinical hours that may be done in person or online with a written exam, plus a one-time 3-hour opioid management course (or an exemption if no controlled substances are used). See LAC 46:XXXIII §409 (renewal timing) and §1611 (CE requirements).
Louisiana Division of Administration+1
---
Live / "In-Person" Hour Minimum: 20 hours must be personally attended clinical courses pertaining to the actual delivery of dental services.
Louisiana Division of Administration
---
Mandatory Topic Hours: 3 of the 30 hours must be an opioid management course (drug diversion, best-practice prescribing of controlled substances, or addiction treatment); doing this once during a career satisfies the requirement.
---
First-time renewal: Dentists renewing their license for the first time are exempt from CE hours except for the 3-hour opioid course and the CPR course listed in §1611, which still apply.
Louisiana Division of Administration
---
Certification alternative: AAOMS deep sedation/general anesthesia recertification (every five years) meets the sedation-CE requirement for permit holders.
Louisiana Division of Administration
---
Immunization practice: The Board confirmed that vaccine administration is within the scope of dentistry (e.g., HPV vaccination), per official meeting minutes.
Louisiana State Board of Dentistry
---
Sedation: To receive or renew a personal moderate sedation or deep sedation/GA permit, dentists must maintain current BLS (CPR) and ACLS (or PALS when applicable) credentials; ACLS must include a personally attended practical component.
Louisiana Division of Administration
---
Dispensing: Dentists holding a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) license are automatically enrolled in the state Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) and must check PMP at least every 90 days for ongoing therapy; controlled substances may not be prescribed via teledentistry except in narrowly defined emergencies.
