How many CE hours do Wyoming physicians need?

A Wyoming medical license renews every year, by June 30, with a 90-day grace period; at every one of those annual renewals, the physician attests to 60 hours of CME earned over the preceding three years — a rolling total, not a fresh 60 hours owed each year (Wyoming Board of Medicine Rules, Ch. 1 § 1-10; Ch. 3 § 7(a)).

Qualifying CME includes AMA Category I or II credit, AOA-approved credit, an ABMS specialty board certificate, self-assessment and quality-improvement activity, volunteer clinical service (1 hour per 5 hours of service, up to 10 hours per year), and Board consultant service (1 hour per 2 hours of service, up to 20 hours per year) (Wyoming Board of Medicine Rules, Ch. 3 § 7(a)(i)–(vii)).

Which CE topics are required for Wyoming physicians?

Wyoming does not designate a mandatory CE topic for every physician; all 60 hours may be earned in any qualifying subject matter of the physician's choosing.

A physician who holds a Wyoming Controlled Substance Registration to dispense a controlled substance must also complete 1 hour of continuing education on responsible controlled-substance prescribing or the treatment of substance use disorder every two years, matching that registration's own two-year renewal cycle — every other annual license renewal, not every renewal ( Wyo. Stat. § 33-26-202(b)(xiv) ).

Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — not a Wyoming Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).

A physician who dispenses controlled substances must first hold a Wyoming Controlled Substance Registration through the Board of Pharmacy — a prerequisite to obtaining a federal DEA registration, not the reverse — which itself renews every two years ( Wyoming Board of Pharmacy — Controlled Substance Registration ).

Do newly licensed Wyoming physicians need CE for their first renewal?

No. A physician who has held a Wyoming license less than three years is exempt from the 60-hour requirement, as is a physician who was board-certified or recertified by ABMS in the past three years, is in (or was recently in) a residency program, or holds an inactive license (Wyoming Board of Medicine Rules, Ch. 3 § 7(b)).

Does the Wyoming Board of Medicine audit CE records?

Yes. The Board randomly audits about 10% of active licensees each year, giving 45 days to produce a signed statement and supporting documentation; records must be retained for at least 4 years, and a licensee found short gets up to 6 months to cure the deficiency (Wyoming Board of Medicine Rules, Ch. 3 § 7(f)–(h)).
