State requirements for Texas Physician Assistants
2 hours of opioid prescribing CME every 2 years
Human trafficking prevention CME required once upon initial renewal and every third renewal
Texas Physician Assistant Standard Renewal Requirements: Texas PAs renew every two years on the date assigned by the Texas Medical Board, after an initial 6–24-month first period. Each cycle requires 40 CME hours, including at least 20 Category I from an AAPA-approved sponsor; the remainder may be Category II. PAs must also complete opioid/controlled-substance CME (≥2 hours) and an HHSC-approved human-trafficking prevention course for each renewal. First-time renewal: If your initial registration is less than 12 months, you are exempt from CME until your subsequent registration; after that, the 40-hour requirement applies. Link • Certification alternative (ABMS/AOA or NCCPA): NCCPA certification is required for initial licensure, but not required for renewal of an active Texas PA license. (This is separate from TMB’s CME requirement.) Link
Controlled substance / Opioid prescribing: PAs must complete at least 2 hours of opioid/controlled-substance CME each renewal, consistent with TMB guidance. Link
DEA or PMP enrollment: Texas requires prescribers to check the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) before prescribing opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or carisoprodol; TMB confirms the mandate applies to physicians and advanced practice professionals (including PAs under delegated authority).
