State requirements for Arizona Physician Assistants
3 hours in opioid-related, substance-use-disorder-related, or addiction-related CME
Arizona Physician Assistant Standard Renewal Requirements: Arizona PAs renew every two years by their birthday and must complete 40 hours of Category I CME before renewal; this includes 3 hours on opioids/SUD/addiction each cycle. The Board verifies CME and conducts random audits, with specific audit rules in regulation. See A.R.S. § 32-2523 and A.A.C. R4-17-205/R4-17-206 for the full requirements and audit procedures, and the Board’s notice on the 3-hour opioid CME requirement.

First-time renewal: During the first biennial license period, the Board may allow a pro-rated number of CME hours instead of the full 40.

Certification alternative (ABMS/AOA or NCCPA): The 40-hour CME requirement is satisfied if the PA holds an approved national certification in good standing at renewal (e.g., NCCPA), per statute.

Controlled substance / Opioid prescribing: All renewing PAs must complete 3 hours of opioid/substance-use/addiction-related CME within the 40 hours.

DEA or PMP enrollment: Any licensed prescriber with an active DEA registration in Arizona must register for the Controlled Substances Prescription Monitoring Program (CSPMP), and must check a patient’s CSPMP report before prescribing an opioid analgesic or benzodiazepine in Schedules II–IV at the start of treatment and at least quarterly while it remains part of treatment.
