I am always interested in continuing education in the areas of health, wellness, nutrition and mental health. Your course was well written, well organized and helpful in meeting state licensure requirements.
Very well written, easy to digest, time efficient, and straight to the point. Thank you!
I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
I am always looking for concise ,thorough, and up to date continuing education, and this course provided exactly what I was looking for. Thank you
Enjoyed this course! It squarely met my license renewal requirement as a physician. It was well-written, and an altogether enjoyable read.
State requirements for North Carolina Medical Doctors
All North Carolina Physicians Need:
- No North Carolina-mandated topics — all 60 hours are General Hours.
Some North Carolina Physicians Also Need:
- 3 Hours Controlled Substances CME — If Prescribing Controlled Substances
- 8 Hours DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)
How many CE hours do North Carolina physicians need?
North Carolina physicians need 60 hours of Category 1 CME over a rolling three-year cycle. Category 2 credit is not accepted, and excess hours earned in one cycle cannot be carried into the next ( North Carolina Medical Board — CME FAQ ; rule 21 NCAC 32R .0101 ).
This three-year CME cycle runs separately from the license itself, which every physician must renew every year on their own birthday, with a 30-day grace period before a late fee applies ( North Carolina Medical Board — Physician Renewals ). The CME cycle typically begins on a physician's first birthday after initial licensure and then repeats every three years from there, independent of each year's license-renewal action ( North Carolina Medical Board — CME FAQ ).
A physician may be exempt from the 60-hour requirement through participation in Maintenance of Certification or initial board certification with ABMS, AOA, or RCPSC, military service in a combat zone or contingency operation, service on a North Carolina General Assembly House or Senate health committee, or holding a resident training license ( North Carolina Medical Board — CME FAQ ).
Which CE topics are required for North Carolina physicians?
A physician who prescribes controlled substances of any kind must complete 3 of the 60 hours specifically on controlled-substances CME each three-year cycle, covering controlled-substance prescribing practices, recognizing signs of abuse or misuse, and prescribing for chronic pain management ( North Carolina Medical Board — Controlled Substances CME FAQ ; rule 21 NCAC 32R .0101 ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training on opioid or substance use disorder treatment, per the federal Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act — a federal requirement, not a North Carolina Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ). A physician who completes MATE Act training is deemed in compliance with the 3-hour controlled-substances CME requirement for the three-year cycle in which the MATE training was completed, so the same training can satisfy both requirements for that cycle ( North Carolina Medical Board — Controlled Substances CME FAQ ).
Do newly licensed North Carolina physicians need CE for their first renewal?
The 60-hour total is due at the end of the three-year CME cycle. A newly licensed physician's CME cycle begins on their first birthday after initial licensure. The medical license still renews annually on the physician's birthday ( North Carolina Medical Board — CME FAQ ).
Does the North Carolina Medical Board audit CE records?
Yes. Physicians self-report their completed CME hours by attestation at each annual renewal, and CME documentation should be kept for 6 years in case of a Board compliance audit ( North Carolina Medical Board — CME FAQ ).
