I am always interested in continuing education in the areas of health, wellness, nutrition and mental health. Your course was well written, well organized and helpful in meeting state licensure requirements.

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.

All Tennessee Physicians Need:

- 2 Hours Controlled Substance Prescribing CME

Some Tennessee Physicians Also Need:

- 8 Hours DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)

Additional information

How many CE hours do Tennessee physicians need?

Tennessee physicians need 40 hours of CME every two years, from AMA PRA Category 1, AAFP Prescribed credit, or AOA Category 1 credit ( Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0880-02-.16 ).

Physician licenses renew every two years on the last day of the physician's birth month ( Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0880-02-.11 ).

Which CE topics are required for Tennessee physicians?

Every physician must complete 2 hours of CME on prescribing controlled substances — covering opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and carisoprodol — each renewal. A physician who is board-certified in pain management, anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, or rheumatology is exempt from this specific topic ( Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0880-02-.16 ).

Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — not a Tennessee Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).

Do newly licensed Tennessee physicians need CE for their first renewal?

Yes. The standard 40-hour requirement applies at a physician's first renewal, the same as every renewal after it ( Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0880-02-.16 ). A different, longer proration schedule applies only to a physician reinstating a lapsed license, not to an ordinary first renewal. The one-time 8-hour DEA MATE training is a federal DEA registration condition rather than a renewal-cycle requirement, so it is not part of the standard hour count at any renewal, first or otherwise.

Does the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners audit CE records?

Yes. Physicians attest to compliance at renewal, and the Board audits licensees selected for verification; documentation must be retained for four years ( Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0880-02-.16 ).
