HOW MANY CE HOURS DO COLORADO PHYSICIANS NEED?
Colorado physicians need 30 hours of continuing medical education every two years, a requirement that took effect for renewals, reinstatements, and reactivations on or after January 1, 2026 ( Colorado Revised Statutes § 12-240-130.5 ). You may complete all 30 hours online with an on-demand Complete Colorado CME Physician Package
Colorado licenses renew on an individualized biennial cycle, expiring on the last day of your birth month every two years ( Colorado Medical Board — Continuing Medical Education ).
WHICH CE TOPICS ARE REQUIRED FOR COLORADO PHYSICIANS?
Every physician must complete 2 hours of substance use disorder prevention training each renewal period, covering the prescribing and treatment topics named in Colorado's substance-use-prevention statute ( Colorado Revised Statutes § 12-30-114 ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder , per the federal MATE Act — not a Colorado Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
DO NEWLY LICENSED COLORADO PHYSICIANS NEED CE FOR THEIR FIRST RENEWAL?
Not always. The Board may waive the CME requirement entirely for a physician's first renewal if they were initially licensed within 12 months of completing a Board-approved internship or postgraduate training program; otherwise, the Board prorates the 30-hour requirement so a physician licensed mid-cycle isn't required to complete it in less than 24 months ( Colorado Revised Statutes § 12-240-130.5 ).
DOES THE COLORADO MEDICAL BOARD AUDIT CE RECORDS?
Yes. The Board may annually audit up to 5% of physicians, chosen at random with oversampling of non-board-certified physicians, and licensees must retain their CME records for four years ( Colorado Medical Board — Continuing Medical Education ).
