State requirements for Alabama Physician Assistants
2 Hours on
Navigating Professional Boundaries in Medicine( One-time - new licensees: within 12 months of licensure by Dec 31, 2025)
Alabama PA — Standard Renewal Requirements: Alabama Physician Assistants renew annually by December 31 through the Licensee Gateway, with renewals opening October 1. (
ALBME Renewals – PA/AA). As of January 1, 2025, PAs must complete 50 hours of AMA PRA Category 1™ or equivalent CME every two years, with no in-person minimum stated on the Board site. (Ala. Admin. Code 540-X-7-.29 • ALBME press release). Additional topic-specific CME applies if you hold a QACSC, are in collaborative/supervisory practice, or for the one-time Professional Boundaries course. (ALBME QACSC—Requirements •ALBME CME—Boundaries & Collaborative/Supervisory).
---
First-time renewal: New licensees are exempt from the basic licensure CME requirement for the calendar year of initial licensure; however, they must complete the 2-hour Professional Boundaries course within 12 months of licensure. (
ALBME CME—Exemptions•ALBME CME—Boundaries).
---
Certification alternative (ABMS/AOA or NCCPA): The Board accepts equivalent credit such as AOA 1-A, AAFP Prescribed, ACOG Cognates, and AAPA Category I, and allows ABMS board certification/MOC to be claimed as credit in the year completed; no information found indicating NCCPA certification alone substitutes for PA CME. (
ALBME CME—Equivalents & ABMS/MOC• Rule text excerpt (pdf)).
---
Controlled substance / Opioid prescribing: QACSC renewal requires 4 AMA PRA Category 1™ hours every two years via Board-approved courses; initial QACSC requires 12 hours (8-hour Board course + 4 approved hours) within the preceding 12 months. (ALBME QACSC—Requirements • QACSC PA initial app (pdf)).
---
DEA or PMP enrollment: To renew a QACSC, you must have a current PDMP registration and a current DEA registration. (
ALBME Renewals—QACSC/LPSP).
