State requirements for Arizona Medical Doctors
Arizona Medical Doctor Standard Renewal Requirement: Arizona MD licenses renew every two years on or before your birthday and require 40 hours of CME earned in the two calendar years before renewal. Physicians authorized to prescribe Schedule II and holding a DEA registration must include 3 hours of opioid/substance-use/addiction-related CME within those 40 hours. The Board certifies compliance at renewal and may randomly audit physicians for CME verification. See A.R.S. § 32-1430 for renewal timing, A.A.C. R4-16-102 for CME specifics, and A.R.S. § 32-1434 for audit authority.

Certification alternative (ABMS/AOA or NCCPA): No information found on this requirement from the state board site. (Arizona rules specify qualifying CME activities rather than substituting board certification for CME hours.)

Controlled substance / Opioid prescribing: If you are authorized to prescribe Schedule II and maintain a valid DEA registration, you must complete at least 3 hours of opioid/substance-use/addiction-related CME each renewal cycle within the 40 hours.

DEA or PMP enrollment: Arizona law requires any licensed prescriber with an active DEA registration in Arizona to register for the Controlled Substances Prescription Monitoring Program (CSPMP); registration and use obligations are defined at A.R.S. § 36-2606 and clarified by the Board of Pharmacy’s CSPMP guidance.
