What you'll learn

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe current epidemiological trends and associations among dietary patterns, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and selected early-onset cancers in the United States.

  2. Differentiate experimental, observational, and clinical evidence regarding proposed pathways linking ultra-processed foods and selected food additives with metabolic risk.

  3. Implement evidence-based dietary strategies and brief nutrition counseling approaches to support metabolic health in clinical practice.

Course description

Dietary patterns are one of several potentially modifiable factors that influence cardiometabolic health and chronic-disease risk. This 1.0-contact-hour activity equips physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice registered nurses, registered nurses, and registered dietitian nutritionists to assess dietary patterns; explain current evidence about ultra-processed foods and selected additives; and apply evidence-based dietary guidance, brief counseling, and referral strategies in routine practice.

Obesity affects more than 40% of U.S. adults and approximately 20% of children and adolescents, and the incidence of several early-onset cancers has increased. Dietary patterns are potentially modifiable contributors within a broader set of genetic, metabolic, environmental, social, and behavioral factors. Many clinicians report limited nutrition training, and emerging state continuing-education requirements further support the need for practical, evidence-based nutrition competency (Albin et al., 2024; GBD 2021 US Obesity Forecasting Collaborators [GBD], 2024; Zhao et al., 2023).

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
