Texas Registered Nurse Standard Renewal Requirements: Texas RNs must renew their license every two years by the end of their birth month. Renewal requires either 20 contact hours of board-approved continuing education in the nurse’s practice area OR an active national certification for that area. There are also mandatory topic-specific CEs— nursing jurisprudence & ethics (every third cycle), geriatric care (for those in elder care), human trafficking prevention (every cycle), and, for ER nurses, one-time forensic evidence requirements ( Texas Board of Nursing ).

First-time renewal: RNs are exempt from CE for their initial license renewal following first licensure by exam, but must comply for all subsequent renewals ( Texas Board of Nursing ).
