What you'll learn

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify evidence-based warning signs, clinical and behavioral risk factors, priority at-risk populations, and the validated screening tools (C-SSRS, ASQ, PHQ-9) used to detect suicide risk across clinical settings.

  2. Evaluate suicide risk through direct, stigma-reducing conversation and structured assessment, and determine the appropriate level of care for the at-risk patient.

  3. Implement

collaborative safety planning and counseling on access to lethal means to reduce a patient’s access to harm during a period of elevated risk.

  4. Select evidence-based treatment considerations, follow-up pathways, crisis resources, and system-level practices that reduce long-term suicide risk and support safe transitions of care.

Course description

Suicide Detection, Intervention, and Prevention prepares physicians and physician assistants to recognize and respond to suicide risk across clinical settings. The course covers current epidemiology, risk factors and warning signs, validated screening tools, direct and stigma-reducing assessment, risk formulation, level-of-care and documentation decisions, collaborative safety planning, counseling on access to lethal means, evidence-based treatment considerations, and safe follow-up practices. Learners will develop a practical approach to identifying risk, evaluating immediate safety, implementing appropriate protective actions, and coordinating referral and continuity of care.

The course addresses persistent gaps in suicide-safer care, including nondisclosure of suicidal thoughts, reliance on unsupported no-suicide contracts, inconsistent assessment and documentation, and failure to arrange active follow-up after suicide-related encounters. Current evidence and clinical guidance are translated into practical workflows that physicians and physician assistants can apply within their scope of practice, applicable laws, and organizational policies.

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
