What you'll learn

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the prevalence, symptom-onset timing across the first 12 postpartum months, risk and protective factors, and preventive counseling recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) for patients at increased risk of perinatal depression.

  2. Describe a guideline-concordant perinatal depression screening workflow specifying validated instruments, obstetric and pediatric screening timepoints, documentation, and the required response to a positive result.

  3. Differentiate postpartum depression from baby blues, adjustment reaction, grief, bipolar disorder, hypomania or mania, and postpartum psychosis using clinical and diagnostic criteria.

  4. Select the role-appropriate urgent-response and escalation action for a patient presenting with suicidal ideation, thoughts of infant harm, or signs of postpartum psychosis.

  5. Compare evidence-based psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy options for postpartum depression, including lactation-related considerations, bipolar screening before antidepressant initiation, and measurement-based follow-up.

Course description

Postpartum depression is among the most common complications of childbirth, and it is frequently detected without being treated. Screening is now widespread across obstetric, primary care, and pediatric settings, yet fewer than 30% of individuals with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders seek or receive treatment. This course addresses the distance between a positive screen and effective care.

Participants work the full clinical pathway across the first postpartum year. The course covers risk recognition and guideline-directed prevention, screening at the time points professional guidance specifies, and structured assessment of a positive screen. It then addresses the differential that separates unipolar depression from bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis, the safety response each profession owes, treatment selection across psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, monitoring toward remission, and the barriers that determine whether a plan can be reached at all.

Participants will strengthen their ability to close the gap between postpartum depression screening and effective care by applying guideline-based risk recognition, structured assessment, accurate diagnostic differentiation, and evidence-supported treatment planning. By course completion, they will be able to effectively monitor progress toward remission and address patient- and system-level barriers that limit access and continuity of care across the first postpartum year.

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
