State requirements for Arizona Medical Doctors
All Arizona Physicians Need:
- No Arizona-mandated topics — all 40 hours are General Hours.
Some Arizona Physicians Also Need:
- 3 Hours Opioid, Substance Use Disorder, or Addiction-Related CME — If Authorized to Prescribe Schedule II Controlled Substances and Holding a DEA Registration
- 8 Hours DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder — If Holding a DEA Registration (One Time Only)
HOW MANY CE HOURS DO ARIZONA PHYSICIANS NEED?
Arizona physicians need 40 hours of continuing medical education during the two calendar years before their biennial renewal ( Arizona Administrative Code, Title 4, Chapter 16 — Rule R4-16-102 ). You may complete all 40 hours online with an on-demand Complete Arizona Medical Doctor CME Package.
Arizona runs an individualized renewal cycle: your license renews every other year on or before your birthday ( Arizona Administrative Code, Title 4, Chapter 16 — Rule R4-16-201.1 ). Excess CME hours don't carry over into the next two-year cycle.
WHICH CE TOPICS ARE REQUIRED FOR ARIZONA PHYSICIANS?
Physicians who are authorized to prescribe Schedule II controlled substances and hold a DEA registration must complete 3 hours of opioid, substance-use-disorder, or addiction-related CME each renewal cycle, counted within the 40-hour total ( Arizona Administrative Code, Title 4, Chapter 16 — Rule R4-16-102 ).
Physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder , per the federal MATE Act — not an Arizona Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).
DO NEWLY LICENSED ARIZONA PHYSICIANS NEED CE FOR THEIR FIRST RENEWAL?
Yes. The standard 40-hour requirement applies starting with a physician's first license renewal ( Arizona Administrative Code, Title 4, Chapter 16 — Rule R4-16-102 ).
DOES THE ARIZONA MEDICAL BOARD AUDIT CE RECORDS?
Yes. Physicians attest to completing their CME hours on the renewal application, and the Board keeps a CME Audit Form on file to verify compliance ( Arizona Medical Board — MD Renewal Application ).

I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
