Course description

Pain management directly affects patient function, quality of life, safety, and clinical outcomes. This course examines the prevalence and causes of chronic pain, comprehensive pain assessment, nonopioid pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments, and the appropriate role of opioids in a multimodal treatment plan. It also addresses opioid-misuse risk factors, prescription drug monitoring programs, toxicology testing, recognition and treatment of opioid use disorder, patient-centered tapering, palliative and end-of-life pain care, ethical decision-making, and relevant provisions of the Controlled Substances Act. Learners will strengthen their ability to evaluate chronic pain, identify opioid-related risks, support safer treatment decisions, and incorporate ethical principles into patient-centered care.

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
