Autoimmune thyroid disease includes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' disease, postpartum thyroiditis, and subclinical thyroid dysfunction. Because symptoms may be nonspecific or fluctuate over time, clinicians must integrate history, examination, thyroid function tests, antibody results, and indicated imaging to distinguish autoimmune disease from other causes of thyroid dysfunction. This course addresses the practice gap between recognizing common symptoms and making evidence-informed diagnostic, treatment, monitoring, and referral decisions. It reviews pathophysiology, risk factors, differential diagnosis, levothyroxine and antithyroid drug management, radioactive iodine, surgery, orbitopathy, special populations, long-term follow-up, patient education, and access barriers. Case applications emphasize individualized decisions, shared decision-making, and care within each learner's professional scope.
This course is intended for physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice registered nurses, pharmacists, registered nurses, and registered dietitians/nutritionists involved in the assessment, treatment, medication management, monitoring, education, or care coordination of patients with autoimmune thyroid disease.
