Course Features
What you'll learn
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
Recognize the clinical presentation and 2026 outbreak context that warrant consideration of cyclosporiasis.
Identify food, water, travel, and shared-meal information relevant to cyclosporiasis exposure assessment and documentation.
Differentiate role-appropriate responsibilities related to Cyclospora-specific testing, specimen collection, result interpretation, documentation, and escalation.
Describe role-appropriate responsibilities for treatment, medication safety, supportive care, monitoring, counseling, referral, follow-up, and public-health reporting.
Course description
Cyclosporiasis is a treatable parasitic infection that frequently goes undetected because the illness resembles self-limited gastroenteritis, and routine laboratory workflows may not reliably identify the parasite. By late July 2026, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had reported more than 6,700 laboratory-confirmed domestically acquired cases, a marked increase compared with the same period in 2025 and a reason to lower the threshold for recognizing prolonged or relapsing watery diarrhea that may require further evaluation. Important actions occur across the healthcare team. These include recognizing a protracted or relapsing illness pattern, obtaining and documenting relevant food and travel history, ensuring that Cyclospora-specific testing is considered and appropriately handled, selecting and monitoring trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole when authorized, supporting safe medication dispensing and administration, counseling patients, escalating concerning findings, coordinating follow-up, and supporting required public-health reporting and traceback.
Participants completing this course will be able to recognize cyclosporiasis amid the 2026 surge and distinguish the responsibilities that apply to their own professional roles. Independent diagnostic and treatment decisions, medication management, nursing care, pharmacy support, dental patient-safety activities, referral, documentation, counseling, and public-health responsibilities should be performed only within applicable law, professional scope of practice, organizational policy, credentialing, and supervision or delegation requirements.

I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CEBroker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
