Renewal Requirements

Next Renewal Date:December 31, 2025
Total Hours Required:5 Hours
General Hours:5 General Hours
Required Courses:

  • First-time renewal: If you were first registered on or after July 1, 2025, you skip the 2025 renewal and your first fee/CE report isn’t due until Dec 31 2026.

  • Certification pathway: To obtain a Virginia registration you must (a) finish a Board-approved technician-training program and (b) pass a national exam (PTCB® or ExCPT®) — or simply show current CPhT status in lieu of the training-plus-exam combo. The rule does not require you to keep the national credential active after registration, but many employers still expect it.

  • Immunization authority: Under the statewide vaccine protocol revised May 12 2023, a pharmacist may direct a registered pharmacy technician to administer any CDC-schedule vaccine (including COVID-19 & flu) to patients ≥ 3 years old. To qualify, the tech must ① complete Board-recognized, hands-on immunization training and skills verification, ② hold current BLS/CPR, and ③ give shots only under the pharmacist’s on-site supervision; no extra annual CE hours are specified beyond the standard 5-hour requirement.

  • Other CE Options: Up to 1 hour per year may be earned by volunteering in a free clinic / health-department pharmacy (3 volunteer hrs = 1 CE hr).
