Renewal Requirements

Next Renewal Date:March 31, 2026
Total Hours Required:10 Hours
General Hours:5 General Hours
  • First-time renewal – Newly licensed Illinois pharmacy technicians owe no CE the first time around; simply renew and pay the fee by March 31.

  • Certification path – All tech licenses issued after Dec 31 2007 must convert to “Certified Pharmacy Technician” (CPhT) by the second renewal (24 months). Becoming certified means passing the PTCB or ExCPT exam and maintaining that national credential for every future renewal.

  • Immunization authority – A pharmacy technician may administer vaccines in Illinois only when:

    • They already hold the Certified designation (active PTCB or ExCPT).

    • They successfully complete an IDFPR-approved, hands-on immunization-training course + current CPR/BLS before giving the first shot.

    • They vaccinate patients age 7 or older under the direct supervision of a pharmacist immunizer and pursuant to a physician’s order or standing protocol.

    • Note: Illinois rules do not add extra CE hours for immunizing techs beyond the 10-hour requirement, but you must keep proof of vaccine-training completion on site.
