Standard Renewal Requirements

Every Virginia registered pharmacy technician must complete 5 contact hours (0.5 CEU) of continuing education each year to satisfy registration renewal — a state requirement that applies regardless of your national certification status. Virginia pharmacy technician registrations expire December 31 of every year, for every technician regardless of when they were originally registered, with no proration of the 5-hour requirement even when a technician’s first renewal period runs longer than a year. Up to 1 of the 5 hours may be satisfied through uncompensated pharmacy services to low-income patients.

National certification through PTCB or NHA is required as a one-time prerequisite to registration itself, but does not substitute for or exempt a technician from the annual 5-hour state continuing education requirement.

Verification and Reporting

• Virginia pharmacy technicians self-certify compliance on the renewal application, retain documentation for 2 years following renewal, and produce it to the Board upon request. Renewal requires an e-Profile number issued by NABP. 18VAC110-21-180 , 18VAC110-21-170
