Course description
This course prepares physicians, physician associates/physician assistants (PAs), pharmacists, and nurses to apply the biopsychosocial model, evidence-informed behaviorchange frameworks, patient-centered communication, and coordinated-care strategies in chronic disease management. Participants will apply these tools within their respective scopes to address readiness for change, treatment-adherence barriers, medication-related concerns, psychosocial needs, monitoring requirements, referral needs, and individualized patient goals.
The course also examines the limited and adjunctive role of manual therapy for selected musculoskeletal symptoms, functional limitations, or respiratory mechanics in carefully selected patients. Manual therapy is not presented as a treatment for the underlying pathophysiology of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, COPD, cardiovascular disease, immune dysfunction, or other systemic chronic conditions.
Behavioral and psychosocial strategies are presented as complements to guideline-directed medical treatment, medication optimization, clinical assessment and monitoring, rehabilitation, preventive care, risk-factor reduction, and appropriate referral. Clinical scenarios demonstrate how physicians and PAs apply these strategies in assessment, treatment planning, prescribing, patient counseling, monitoring, referral, documentation, and coordination with other healthcare professionals.
This training addresses the critical need for a biopsychosocial approach to patient care, as chronic conditions continue to be a primary driver of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs.
