Evaluate the effectiveness and individualization of evidence-based treatment and monitoring approaches for eating disorders, including nutritional rehabilitation, psychotherapy, medical care, and medication management.
Evaluate how psychological, social, and cultural factors may influence eating-disorder risk, clinical presentation, help-seeking, treatment engagement, and recovery across clinical and community settings.
Course description
This course examines the major eating disorders, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED), including their clinical features, their prevalence across diverse populations, and evidence-based approaches to treatment and monitoring. It addresses how presentations differ by age, sex, gender identity, and cultural background, and how to coordinate nutritional, medical, psychological, and pharmacological care for the individual patient. By the end, learners will be able to differentiate the major eating disorders, recognize how they present across different populations, evaluate treatment and monitoring options, and account for the psychological, social, and cultural factors that shape development and recovery with the goal of earlier detection and more effective, person-centered care.
Eating disorders are frequently missed because they affect people of every body size, age, sex, gender identity, and racial or ethnic group, and because patients may conceal symptoms or present without obvious physical signs, leaving many cases undiagnosed. This course addresses that recognition-to-care gap by strengthening clinicians' ability to identify risk factors and symptoms, individualize screening decisions, and select coordinated, culturally appropriate treatment.
