What you'll learn

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define pediatric abusive head trauma and distinguish it from older terminology such as shaken baby syndrome.

  2. Identify common risk factors, mechanisms of injury, clinical findings, and long-term consequences associated with pediatric abusive head trauma.

  3. Describe appropriate clinical evaluation, stabilization, diagnostic workup, and referral considerations for suspected pediatric abusive head trauma.

  4. Explain legal reporting responsibilities, documentation expectations, caregiver education strategies, and prevention steps related to pediatric abusive head trauma.

Course description

Pediatric abusive head trauma (PAHT), also called abusive head trauma (AHT), is an inflicted injury to the skull or intracranial contents of an infant or young child caused by blunt impact, violent shaking, or both. This course reviews how PAHT may present, why infants and young children are especially vulnerable, and how clinicians can recognize concerning findings, initiate stabilization and diagnostic evaluation, document objectively, report suspected abuse as required by law, and coordinate referral and follow-up care.

The course covers the definition and terminology of PAHT, prevalence and long-term consequences, causative and risk factors, mechanisms of injury, clinical signs and symptoms, patient workup, treatment considerations, indicators of abuse, Kentucky-specific reporting requirements, prevention education, calming strategies for caregivers, and multidisciplinary follow-up. By the end of the course, learners should be better prepared to identify possible PAHT, respond appropriately to suspected abuse, and support patient safety through timely clinical action and care coordination.

This course addresses the need for improved recognition, clinical reasoning, documentation, reporting, and interprofessional management of suspected pediatric abusive head trauma. Because PAHT may present with nonspecific symptoms and can be missed, misattributed, or complicated by medical mimics, healthcare professionals need clear guidance on evaluation, safety actions, legal responsibilities, and prevention-focused caregiver counseling.

This course is designed to satisfy Kentucky’s continuing education content requirement of 3 contact hours covering the recognition and prevention of pediatric abusive head trauma, as accepted by the applicable Kentucky licensing board.

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
