What you'll learn

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the relationship among tick exposure, alpha-gal sensitization, epidemiology, and clinically relevant risk factors.

  2. Recognize delayed and atypical presentations of alpha-gal syndrome that warrant evaluation, communication, emergency response, or referral.

  3. Explain how clinical history and alpha-gal–specific IgE results are used by authorized clinicians to support the diagnosis of alpha-gal syndrome.

  4. Identify the components of an individualized, interprofessional management plan that includes emergency response, mammalian-product avoidance, medication and product review, referral, patient education, and tick-bite prevention

Course description

Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is an emerging tick-associated allergy that can cause delayed reactions to mammalian meat and other mammal-derived products. Because symptoms often appear hours after exposure, AGS can be difficult to recognize and may be mistaken for idiopathic anaphylaxis, contributing to delayed diagnosis, repeated emergency visits, and preventable reactions.

This course gives healthcare professionals practical, role-appropriate guidance for recognizing possible AGS, supporting emergency response, interpreting diagnostic findings, and coordinating referral and follow-up care. Learners will also explore individualized avoidance strategies, patient education, and tick-bite prevention to help improve outcomes for patients with suspected or confirmed AGS.

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
