Medication Treatment, Behavioral Health, and Adjunctive Manual Therapy Across the Lifespan

Upon completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

1. Identify the guideline-supported components of multimodal SUD care, including screening, medication treatment, behavioral health care, harm reduction, chronic pain management, and coordinated follow-up.

2. Differentiate established SUD treatments from supportive and emerging integrative strategies, including the clearly bounded role of manual therapy for selected pain or comfort concerns.

3. Evaluate patient scenarios involving SUD, chronic pain, pregnancy, adolescence, or older adulthood for appropriate screening, medication-related, referral, safety, and supportive-care decisions.

4. Select patient-centered, trauma-informed communication and documentation practices when discussing manual or touch-based adjunctive therapies.

5. Develop a role-appropriate care plan that integrates medication treatment, behavioral health support, harm reduction, nonopioid pain strategies, monitoring, and referral or collaboration when manual therapy may be appropriate.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are chronic, treatable medical conditions shaped by biological vulnerability, psychological stressors, trauma, and social environment. Like other chronic diseases, they are best managed through evidence-based treatment, longitudinal follow-up, and coordinated, patient-centered care. For physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses, and other clinicians involved in SUD care, responsibilities vary according to professional role and practice setting. Across disciplines, relevant contributions include recognizing and screening for SUD, identifying and communicating safety concerns, supporting medication treatment and harm reduction, educating patients and families, monitoring treatment response, coordinating care, and referring appropriately. Diagnosis, prescribing, dispensing, medication administration, and other regulated activities should be performed only by professionals authorized to carry out those functions.

This course establishes a clear hierarchy of care. Evidence-based medication treatment, behavioral health care, harm reduction, and coordinated follow-up are the core components of SUD management. Overdose prevention, withdrawal assessment, and treatment of co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions are essential safety priorities. Chronic pain and other physical concerns should be addressed with individualized, multimodal care. Within that framework, manual therapy is presented as an optional adjunct that may be considered for selected pain, mobility, or comfort concerns in appropriately selected, medically stable patients who consent to hands-on care.

Manual therapy does not replace medication treatment, withdrawal management, naloxone and overdose prevention, behavioral health treatment, or emergency care. Where the course discusses manual therapy for withdrawal symptoms, cravings, relapse prevention, autonomic regulation, or neonatal outcomes, the supporting evidence is limited or emerging, and claims are labeled accordingly. The aim is to prepare clinical learners to contribute to comprehensive, guideline-concordant care within their professional roles through screening, assessment, patient education, medication-related support, prescribing when authorized, dispensing or administration when authorized, monitoring, coordination, referral, and collaboration, while understanding where adjunctive, hands-on approaches may and may not contribute.
