Evaluation of Pain Management After Surgery

At the conclusion of this continuing education activity, the participant will be able to:

1. Assess the importance of postoperative management.

2. Define multimodal analgesia and describe the aim in which to increase the effect of analgesics and/or surpass the severity of the nociception process.

3. Examine the observational study’s elements such as, but not limited to, the number of patients, surgical departments, and their medical documentation.

4. Critically and objectively assess the results from the 216 patients from this observational study.

5. Describe the difference of pain management treatments between patients admitted into both surgical departments and patient’s that were admitted in the emergency mode.

6. Define the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and recognize the importance of a patient’s pain rating for their treatment and recovery process.

7. Discuss the World Health Organization (WHO) analgesic ladder and understand how it is used along with the NRS to help determine which pharmaceutical treatments to use.

8. Recognize the importance of the frequent use of pain management days when a patient has confirmed complications during post operational wound healing.

9. Critically and objectively assess the methods of pre-emptive analgesia, multimodal analgesia and analgosedation.

10. Identify the positive effects of systematic monitoring of pain at comparable time intervals.

The aim of managing postoperative pain is to minimize the adverse effects of acute postsurgical pain and facilitate the patient's return to normal activities. Traditionally, opioids have been the primary treatment for acute postoperative pain. However, concerns about opioid misuse have prompted a shift towards exploring alternative pain management approaches.

This course delves into the consequences of inadequate pain control, highlighting the heightened risk of chronic pain and patient dissatisfaction. Participants will understand the importance of optimizing postoperative pain management for better immediate results, shorter hospital stays, and improved overall patient satisfaction. By engaging in this training, the interdisciplinary team will enhance its ability to navigate the complexities of postoperative pain management, leading to enhanced patient care and outcomes. Through collaborative efforts, the healthcare team ensures comprehensive care that addresses all aspects of postoperative pain.
