Medical Emergencies and Airway Management

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss procedure-specific and patient-specific risk factors that can lead to dental emergencies in oral health care settings.

2. Describe steps that dental professionals can take to prepare for a medical emergency.

3. Describe the steps involved in performing a primary & secondary patient survey during an emerging perioperative event.

4. Recognize the signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies in order to formulate a diagnosis.

5. Initiate the appropriate action based on the diagnosis to stabilize the patient until emergency medical services arrive.

6. Identify clinical best practices to protect the airway of sedated patients.

7. Identify the signs of respiratory distress in patients and respond accordingly.

8. Recognize the most common airway emergencies associated with dentistry and their appropriate treatments.

This course does not meet Florida’s Medical Emergencies (Must Contain Airway Management) requirement, as it must be taken in a live, in-person session.
