State requirements for Vermont Registered Nurses
Vermont Registered Nurse Standard Renewal Requirements: Vermont RNs must renew their license every two years, with licenses expiring March 31 of odd-numbered years. License renewal requires completing 20 hours of approved continuing education, or alternative options such as national certification, or verifying sufficient paid nursing practice hours completed during the renewal cycle. There are no in-person or mandatory topic requirements; all CE may be elective and relevant to the nurse’s role (
Vermont Board of Nursing).
---
First-time renewal: Nurses licensed within 90 days before the renewal deadline are not required to renew until the next full licensing cycle
vermont.gov
---
Other Certifications that nurses hold that needs to be renewed: Nurses must maintain any additional specialty or advanced certifications as required by their employer or practice setting—these are not managed by the Board for license renewal.
