Detailed Breakdown
  • Massachusetts Registered Nurse Standard Renewal Requirements: Registered Nurses in Massachusetts must renew their license every two years by their birthday in an even-numbered year, completing 15 contact hours of continuing education that meets Board guidelines. All CE must be documented and retained for four years, with specific mandatory trainings on

    (one-time) and
    domestic/sexual violence
(at each renewal). Full details and renewal procedures are published on the
Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing site
    .

---

  • First-time renewal: RN licenses are exempt from CE requirements at the first renewal after initial licensure; cognitive impairment training is a one-time mandatory requirement for this cycle.

---

  • Certification alternative: National specialty certification or academic coursework in nursing may be used to fulfill some or all CE requirements if compliant with Board standards.

---

  • Other Certifications that nurses hold that needs to be renewed: All national, specialty, or advanced certifications must be kept current and individually maintained, but do not substitute for the required Board CE unless specifically approved.
