State requirements for New Mexico Registered Nurses
New Mexico Registered Nurse Standard Renewal Requirements: New Mexico RNs must renew their license every two years on their birth month and complete 30 hours of approved continuing education during each renewal period. General nursing courses, academic credits, and national certifications can satisfy this requirement if approved. More details about the online renewal portal are available at the
New Mexico Board of Nursing’s official website.
---
First-time renewal: All RNs must meet the 30-hour CE requirement at first and subsequent renewals; no exemption is provided for newly-licensed RNs.
---
Certification alternative: Maintaining current national RN specialty certification recognized by the Board can fully substitute for the 30-hour CE requirement.
---
Other Certifications that nurses hold that needs to be renewed: RNs must keep any additional specialty or advanced certifications required by their employer or role; these are maintained independently from Board license renewal.
