New York State does not impose a continuing education hour requirement on Licensed Practical Nurses. Instead, LPNs must renew their registration every three years through the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of the Professions, pay the $73 renewal fee, and complete NYSED-approved infection control coursework every four years. The LPN license itself is valid for life; it is the registration that must be renewed to legally practice. First-time renewal: The second registration after licensure is shortened to align the re-registration period with the licensee's birth month, and the fee is prorated accordingly. New York State Education Department LPNs who graduated from a NYSED-registered program have already satisfied the initial infection control requirement through their education; however, after obtaining a New York LPN license, they must take infection control coursework every four years or qualify for an exemption.
