Virginia Licensed Practical Nurse Standard Renewal Requirements: Virginia LPNs must renew their license every two years by their birth month, with the renewal year matching the parity (odd/even) of their birth year. To satisfy continued competency, most LPNs complete 30 hours of CE, but alternatives (such as current specialty certification or qualifying academic/teaching activities) are accepted. All details and activity options are on the Virginia Board of Nursing site .

First-time renewal: LPNs are exempt from continued competency for their first renewal after initial licensure; they simply renew by the end of their birth month.

Certification alternative: You may satisfy renewal by holding current national specialty certification instead of completing CE or practice hours.
