New York State Infection Control & Barrier Precautions Course (NYSED/NYSDOH Approved)

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Explain the professional's responsibility to adhere to scientifically accepted principles and practices of infection prevention and control in all healthcare settings, and to monitor the performance of those for whom you are responsible.

2. Describe the modes and mechanisms of transmission of pathogenic organisms in the healthcare setting and the strategies for prevention and control.

3. Apply engineering and work-practice controls to reduce the opportunity for patient and healthcare worker exposure to potentially infectious material.

4. Select and use appropriate barriers and personal protective equipment for the prevention of patient and healthcare worker contact with potentially infectious material.

5. Create and maintain a safe environment for patient care through the application of infection control principles and practices for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization.

6. Describe the prevention and control of infectious and communicable diseases in healthcare workers, including immunization, exposure response, and work restrictions.

7. Recognize the signs and symptoms of sepsis, describe the elements of New York State's sepsis protocols, and identify the steps for early intervention.

These seven training elements are required for NYSED Approved Training.

New York State infection control requirements

Who must complete this course: registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians (MD), physician assistants, specialist assistants, dentists, dental hygienists, optometrists, podiatrists, and athletic trainers licensed in New York. (Osteopathic Physicians must complete their requirement with a AOA and NYS Approved Infection Control Training)

How often: Every four years, or within 90 days of resuming practice in New York State.

Course length: Must be 4 contact hours, but it can be fully online and self-paced.

Approval: AchieveCE is a NYSED- and NYSDOH-approved provider of the Infection Control and Barrier Precautions training mandated by Chapter 786 of the Laws of 1992. Provider ID IC 230. A certificate is issued immediately on completion. Your completion is reported to NYSED as required, and you keep a copy for your records.

About this course

This NYS infection control course satisfies the New York State Education Department and Department of Health mandate for infection control and barrier precautions training. It covers all seven required training elements, from the professional's responsibility to follow scientifically accepted infection prevention practices through sepsis awareness, using scenarios drawn from hospital, clinic, dental, and long-term care settings.

You will work through how pathogens move through healthcare environments, which engineering and work-practice controls interrupt transmission, how to select and use personal protective equipment correctly, and how to clean, disinfect, and sterilize equipment and surfaces to New York standards. The course also addresses protecting healthcare workers themselves, including vaccination, exposure management, and work restrictions, and closes with early recognition and response to sepsis.
