How many CME hours do Michigan osteopathic physicians need?

Michigan osteopathic physicians need 150 hours of continuing education every three years, of which at least 60 hours must be Category 1, with no more than 90 hours from Category 2 activities ( R 338.143, Michigan Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery General Rules ).

Which CME topics are required for Michigan osteopathic physicians?

Every osteopathic physician must complete 1 hour of medical ethics and 3 hours of pain and symptom management (of which at least 1 hour must specifically address controlled-substance prescribing) every three-year cycle ( R 338.143 ).

Every osteopathic physician must also complete 1 hour of implicit bias training per year of the license cycle (3 hours per 3-year cycle); these hours may be counted toward the general 150-hour total rather than owed in addition to it ( Michigan LARA — DO Licensing Guide ; R 338.143(1)(e) ).

Separately, every osteopathic physician must complete a one-time human trafficking identification training, which does not count toward the 150-hour CE total ( Michigan LARA — Human Trafficking Identification Training Requirements ; MCL 333.16148 ).

Osteopathic physicians holding a DEA registration must also complete a one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Training on Opioid or Substance Use Disorder, per the federal MATE Act — not a Michigan Board mandate ( DEA Diversion Control Division — MATE Act Training FAQ ).

Do newly licensed Michigan osteopathic physicians need CME for their first renewal?

No. An osteopathic physician's initial license covers only a partial first cycle, and the 150-hour CE requirement applies starting with the first renewal after that initial license expires ( R 338.141–R 338.143 ).

Does the Michigan Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery audit CME records?

Yes. The Board randomly selects a percentage of renewed licensees for a post-renewal audit.
