What you'll learn
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
Distinguish a deliberate bioterrorism event from a naturally occurring outbreak using epidemiologic, clinical, and exposure-pattern clues.
Identify the principal biological, chemical, radiological, and nuclear agents and their common dissemination routes.
Select appropriate diagnostic priorities, treatments, and medical countermeasures for patients exposed to principal bioterrorism agents.
Apply appropriate isolation, infection-control, decontamination, and personal protective equipment measures for suspected biological, chemical, and radiological exposures.
Explain the osteopathic physician's responsibilities within a bioterrorism readiness plan and the Health Alert Network across preparation, response, and recovery phases.
Course description
This course prepares osteopathic physicians to recognize and respond to potential bioterrorism incidents involving biological, chemical, radiological, and nuclear agents. It addresses clinical recognition, differential diagnosis, treatment and medical countermeasures, decontamination, infection-control precautions, personal protective equipment, reporting, incident-command coordination, and risk communication.
By the end of the course, osteopathic physicians will be able to distinguish a natural outbreak from a deliberate attack, identify principal agents and dissemination routes, select appropriate clinical and public-health responses, apply protective measures, and explain the physician's role within a bioterrorism readiness plan and the Health Alert Network.
The practice gap is the difference between general awareness that bioterrorism may occur and the physician's ability to recognize unusual disease patterns, initiate appropriate patient care, protect staff and other patients, and coordinate rapidly with public-health and emergency-response systems. This activity addresses that gap through clinically focused, systems-based education relevant to osteopathic practice.
State requirement: This course is intended to satisfy the one-time requirement for four hours of CME relating to the medical consequences of an act of terrorism involving WMDs or bioterrorism.

I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
