Standard Renewal Requirements

Every Texas pharmacist must complete 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years to satisfy license renewal. Texas pharmacist licenses renew on an individualized biennial cycle tied to the pharmacist’s own birth month, with the expiration date falling in the pharmacist’s birth month and an initial licensure period that can range from eighteen to thirty months depending on when during the year the pharmacist is first licensed. Within the 30 hours, Texas requires 1 hour of Texas-specific pharmacy law and a human trafficking prevention course each renewal period. All 30 hours may be completed through home study or online courses with an accredited package like Texas Pharmacy CE Package .

Conditional Renewal Requirements

Every Texas pharmacist must complete a one-time 2-hour continuing education requirement on controlled substance prescribing and monitoring , due by the pharmacist’s first anniversary of licensure only — this is not a recurring requirement in every renewal cycle. 22 Tex. Continuing education earned to maintain a specialty certification — sterile compounding (2 hours low/medium-risk or 4 hours high-risk, per 2 years), immunization administration (3 hours per 2 years plus current BLS), preceptor status (3 hours per renewal period), or drug therapy management (6 hours annually) — may be applied toward the 30-hour renewal total rather than added on top of it. First-Time Requirements

A newly licensed pharmacist is exempt from most continuing education during their initial license period, except the human trafficking prevention course and the one-time 2-hour controlled substance prescribing/monitoring requirement, from which new licensees are not exempt. 22 Tex. Supplemental (Non-Mandatory) Training

Under House Bill 3285 (86R), the Texas Board of Pharmacy encourages, but does not require, pharmacists to complete training on the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders and those at risk of developing one, such as a program promoted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SAMHSA’s Providers Clinical Support System (PCSS) offers a free activity for pharmacists, Opioid Use Disorder and Pain Management Assessment Tool, on its website. This training does not count toward the 30-hour continuing education requirement.
