Standard Renewal CE Requirements

Every New York pharmacist must complete 45 hours of acceptable formal continuing education during each 3-year registration period. Up to 22 of the required 45 hours may be completed through online or home-study courses, such as those included in our New York Pharmacy CE Package , while at least 23 hours must be completed through live instruction to satisfy New York pharmacist registration renewal requirements. Within the 45 hours, New York pharmacists must complete 3 hours of medication and prescription error reduction CE and 3 hours of pharmaceutical compounding CE , every renewal period. Hours do not carry over between registration periods. New York pharmacist registrations run on an individualized cycle, renewing every 3 years and ending with the month prior to the pharmacist’s own birth month, rather than a shared statewide date.

Conditional Renewal CE Requirements

Pharmacists authorized for collaborative drug therapy management must complete 5 additional hours of continuing education, on top of the standard 45-hour requirement, in the practice area(s) covered by their collaborative drug therapy management protocol(s). This add-on is scheduled to sunset for registrations after July 1, 2030. N.Y. Educ. Law § 6827(2)

First-Time CE Requirements for New York Pharmacists

A pharmacist’s first registration period is prorated to align future renewals with their birth month; continuing education for that shortened first period is prorated at 1.25 hours per month. NYSED — Pharmacist Continuing Education

Verification and Reporting

New York pharmacists must maintain their own continuing education records, or ensure the Department can access them, for 6 years from the program date, and are subject to random Department audit requiring copies of original records upon request. A pharmacist who has not met the requirement by their renewal date may be issued a conditional registration for up to 1 year rather than an automatic lapse. N.Y. Educ.
