What you'll learn
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
Assess controlled-substance medication-use processes against applicable federal, state, and facility requirements relevant to consultant pharmacist oversight.
Evaluate personnel controls, documentation, count and waste records, and resident-level patterns for controlled-substance diversion risk.
Recommend an organizational intervention that can move a controlled-substance safety or compliance finding from consultant review to implementation.
Select the required regulatory, facility, and clinical contacts and applicable timelines for a controlled substance loss or suspected diversion event.
Determine the most complete consultant pharmacist action plan for a controlled-substance problem by integrating assessment, monitoring, documentation, communication, and follow-up.
Course description
Consultant pharmacists provide independent medication-use oversight in settings where controlled substances create simultaneous patient-safety, diversion, documentation, and regulatory risks. Effective oversight requires more than knowing a single rule. It requires tracing medication ownership, reconciling records, evaluating personnel controls, recognizing patterns that warrant investigation, communicating findings to the responsible parties, and monitoring whether corrective actions are sustained.
This course teaches the federal requirements that form the national baseline and a repeatable method for locating and applying each jurisdiction's state requirements, with Florida used as the worked example. Instruction then moves from rules to practice by examining how consultant pharmacists assess prescription and medication-use processes, review personnel training and competency, evaluate diversion indicators, route recommendations through facility leadership, and coordinate mandatory and clinical notifications without exceeding pharmacist scope.
The course closes by integrating regulatory assessment, personnel oversight, organizational implementation, communication, documentation, and follow-up into a single controlled-substance compliance action plan. The expected practice outcome is a more systematic consultant pharmacist review process in which findings are prioritized by resident risk and legal urgency, recommendations are assigned to responsible owners, and corrective actions are documented and monitored through completion.

Very well written, easy to digest, time efficient, and straight to the point. Thank you!
I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CE Broker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
