Course Features
What you'll learn
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
Describe the federal and state requirements that govern pharmacist patient assessment, laboratory test ordering, and dose adjustment in a hospital.
Prioritize ICU patients for pharmacist assessment using a hospital method that combines clinical triggers, medication regimen complexity, and severity of illness.
Evaluate a hospital pharmacy-to-dose or laboratory-monitoring protocol for its required dosing, monitoring, and escalation elements.
Identify the protocol-specific competency and documentation elements that show each ICU patient’s assessment, laboratory monitoring, and dosing were completed as required.
Select the laboratory and microbiology results that should trigger pharmacist reassessment of ICU drug therapy under hospital protocols.
Course description
Critically ill patients receive complex, rapidly changing medication regimens that depend on accurate patient assessment, timely laboratory monitoring, and precise dosing. In most hospitals, those functions are carried out by staff and clinical pharmacists working under protocols, policies, and competency systems that an overseeing pharmacist, such as a consultant pharmacist of record, director of pharmacy, or pharmacist-in-charge, is responsible for overseeing. This course addresses the gap between bedside pharmacotherapy knowledge and institutional oversight. It teaches consultant pharmacists and other overseeing pharmacists how to describe the federal and state requirements that govern pharmacist patient assessment, laboratory test ordering, and dose adjustment in a hospital, prioritize intensive care unit (ICU) patients for pharmacist assessment using a hospital method, evaluate hospital pharmacy-todose and laboratory-monitoring protocols, identify the protocol-specific competency and documentation elements for these functions, and select the laboratory and microbiology results that should trigger reassessment of drug therapy. By the end of the course, learners will be able to review a hospital ICU’s patient assessment, laboratory monitoring, and dosing processes as a system, identify where those processes fall short of regulatory and professional expectations, and recommend specific, approvable improvements. This activity provides 3.0 contact hours of instruction in a single practice setting: the hospital. For Florida consultant pharmacists, it maps to Rule 64B16-26.302(3), Consultant Pharmacist Facility Responsibilities, subparagraph (b), Pharmacist-Patient Responsibilities; pharmacists in other states should confirm how their board applies it to renewal requirements.

Very well written, easy to digest, time efficient, and straight to the point. Thank you!
I appreciate the convenience of the course being online and accessible through my phone and that it directly reports to CE Broker to support mandated education requirements.
I really loved this information. I was hospitalized last year for almost a month and I noticed multiple medical errors (not being hooked up to my IV multiple times, given wrong medication which caused my sodium to be very low, etc.) which lengthened my stay. I can now define those exact errors and better understand what happened to me. I hate that these medical errors are so common and I appreciate how well laid out your breakdown and categorization of them was.
