NYS Infection Control Course for DOs (AOA 1-A, NYSED Approved)

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

• Explain the DO's responsibility to adhere to scientifically accepted principles and practices of infection prevention and control in all healthcare settings, and to monitor the performance of those for whom you are responsible.

• Describe the modes and mechanisms of transmission of pathogenic organisms in the healthcare setting and the strategies for prevention and control.

• Apply engineering and work-practice controls to reduce the opportunity for patient and healthcare worker exposure to potentially infectious material.

• Select and use appropriate barriers and personal protective equipment for the prevention of patient and healthcare worker contact with potentially infectious material.

• Create and maintain a safe environment for patient care through the application of infection control principles and practices for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization.

• Describe the prevention and control of infectious and communicable diseases in healthcare workers, including immunization, exposure response, and work restrictions.

• Recognize the signs and symptoms of sepsis, describe the elements of New York State's sepsis protocols, and identify the steps for early intervention.

These seven training elements are required for NYSED Approved Training.

New York State infection control requirements for osteopathic physicians

Who must complete it: physicians (MD and DO), physician assistants, and specialist assistants licensed in New York, along with nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, optometrists, podiatrists, and athletic trainers. This version is for DOs.

How often: every four years, and within 90 days of resuming practice in New York State.

Course length: 4 hours, fully online and self-paced.

Credit: 4.0 AOA Category 1-A credits. Counts toward New York's CME requirement for DOs and toward AOA CME.

About this course

This NYS infection control course satisfies the New York State Education Department and Department of Health mandate for infection control and barrier precautions training. It covers all seven required training elements, from the physician's responsibility to follow scientifically accepted infection prevention practices through sepsis recognition and New York's sepsis protocols, using scenarios from emergency, inpatient, office, and long-term care settings.

You will work through how pathogens move through healthcare environments, which engineering and work-practice controls interrupt transmission, how to select and use PPE, and how cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization standards apply to the equipment and surfaces you are responsible for. The course also covers protecting healthcare workers themselves, including immunization, exposure management, and work restrictions.
