Texas PAs now need 1 hour of nutrition CME

Texas now requires every physician assistant to complete 1 hour of continuing medical education on nutrition and metabolic health. The Texas Medical Board (TMB) adopted the rule on August 14, 2026. If you hold a Texas PA license, here is what it means for your next renewal. The course that fits is our Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Health course, 1 hour, online, $30.

What is the Texas PA nutrition CME requirement?

Senate Bill 25 (2025) told the TMB to require nutrition CME for the professionals it licenses. For physician assistants, the Board amended 22 TAC §183.16 to add 1 hour of CME on nutrition and metabolic health to the biennial requirement, under Occupations Code Section 204.1563. The content follows the guidelines of the Texas Nutrition Advisory Committee.

Three details matter:

  • It applies to all PAs. There is no practice-area exception and no opt-out for specialists.

  • It starts with licenses expiring on or after May 30, 2027. If your registration is due before that date, the hour is not yet owed for that renewal.

  • It is 1 hour. The Board set the number at 1 hour added to the biennial CME requirement, not a multi-hour block.

Always confirm your own due date on your TMB license record. PA registrations run on an individual anniversary date, so there is no single statewide deadline.

How does the nutrition hour fit into the 40 credits?

Texas PAs need 40 CME credits every 24 months. At least 20 must be formal Category I credit from an AAPA-approved sponsor, and the rest can be Category II. The Texas Physician Assistant CME Package covers all 40. See the full breakdown on our Texas physician assistant CE requirements page.

The Board has not said whether the nutrition hour counts inside those 40 credits or sits on top of them. Until it does, complete the hour with an accredited provider, keep the certificate, and count it toward your 40 wherever the Board allows. The rule does say that both formal and informal courses can count, as long as an accredited provider designates the course.

The nutrition hour is one line on a longer list. Depending on your practice, a Texas PA may also owe:

Who else in Texas has a nutrition requirement?

Physicians have the same 1-hour rule: see Texas nutrition CME for physicians. Nurses are covered by a separate statute section, and the Board of Nursing has not set the hours yet: see Texas nutrition CE for nurses and the Texas RN, Texas LVN and Texas APRN CE requirements. The same 1-hour course works for every Texas professional.
