This presentation highlights pharmacists’ critical role in optimizing acute ischemic stroke care, where “time is brain.” Detailed discussion of the clinical use of the BEFAST assessment (Balance, Eyes, Face, Arm, Speech, Time) to quickly recognize anterior and posterior circulation strokes and establish the essential Last Known Well time. It also emphasizes teaching at-risk patients to recognize BEFAST signs and understand the seriousness of transient ischemic attacks.
The session’s core addresses hyperacute drug therapy, comparing traditional alteplase with the operational and clinical benefits of tenecteplase. It also presents a rigorous pharmacist checklist covering absolute contraindications and strict blood pressure and blood glucose management.
Pharmacists will learn to select appropriate antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy for patients with ischemic stroke and gain practical counseling points for patients receiving preventive treatment.
